80% of the world’s evangelical Christians live in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Over the last 50 years, God’s church has grown exponentially in these areas.

These regions have tremendous mission sending potential to help bring the gospel to unreached peoples, but they currently send only 20% of the world’s cross-cultural missionaries!

Embracing God&rsquo;s adventure for my family was always easy to do&hellip;.until it wasn&rsquo;t. Let me explain. My husband and I had been partners in ministry since before we were married. As college students in a small town, it was easy to follow God&rsquo;s call into ministry. Years passed as we served in small-town churches with families who were mostly like us - good kids, good homes, familiar surroundings. Often, times were financially tight as our family grew to four. I thought I was making big sacrifices.
Then, God moved in my husband&rsquo;s heart through a literal earthquake and resulting tsunami on the other side of the world, and the definition of &ldquo;sacrifice&rdquo; changed. The day I hugged him goodbye as he boarded his first international flight with only a backpack, I learned a new kind of sacrifice. He was headed to a 100% Muslim country to do relief work (and hopefully, somehow, share the gospel) for 14 days.
&ldquo;I can do this.&rdquo; I thought. By God&rsquo;s grace, I did it, and so did my husband. I mentally patted us both on the back for being obedient to God. We both thought we would continue in the comfortable, familiar pattern of life we had established. However, the impact of that trip had changed my husband. He couldn&rsquo;t forget the people he met who had never seen a Bible, had never passed by a church, and had never known of Jesus as anything more than a prophet. By the following year, he was on another backpack adventure to the same country, and I was marking off the days on a calendar again.
It was an overseas phone call from my husband, halfway through the second trip, that changed my definition of &ldquo;sacrifice&rdquo; again. Through the static and shakiness of an international cell phone call, he expressed that he believed God was calling us as a family to LIVE in this country. I immediately responded: &ldquo;Did I hear you correctly, and did you hear God correctly?&rdquo; I had so many reasons why this couldn&rsquo;t be God&rsquo;s plan for us.&nbsp;
That first conversation did not go the way my husband had hoped it would.
Over the next several days, I poured out my heart to God. I was scared. I was mad. I felt betrayed! I didn&rsquo;t marry a missionary. How could God trick me into falling in love with this man who was now in love with a people group so foreign and scary to me? As I honestly wept before God, he began to open my eyes to the ways he had prepared us for this call. He had developed in me a curious fascination with life on the mission field. I started to recall conversations with the wife of a missionary family home on furlough, attending our church. He showed me how his hand was in the uncharacteristic decision we had made a year ago to homeschool our children. I couldn&rsquo;t deny the deep, calm, centering voice in my heart that I had become so familiar with throughout my walk with Jesus: &ldquo;Trust Me. I&rsquo;m in this.&rdquo;
Several days later, when my husband returned home to our safe and comfortable life, I was ready to consider this new life of risk, sacrifice, and adventure. I remember him saying, &ldquo;I feel like I&rsquo;m standing on the edge of a cliff, and God is telling me that it&rsquo;s okay to jump. I just want to know if you&rsquo;re willing to jump with me.&rdquo; I put my hand in his and said, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m ready. Let&rsquo;s jump!&rdquo;
God completely united us. When we sat down with our children, we were able to confidently tell them that we believed God had called us to a family adventure. And if he asked us to do it, he would be with us when we went. In terms that made sense to a 6-year-old and a 9-year-old, we told them that we were going to a place where brothers and sisters, as well as moms and dads, didn&rsquo;t know how much Jesus loves them. God wants us to go and tell them. Our children responded: &ldquo;Well, of course he does!&rdquo;&nbsp;
This moment began a unique bond within our little family unit. We took a team approach and decided on a family motto: &ldquo;Fully rely on God together!&rdquo; To follow God into this adventure, we had to sell our house and most of our belongings, but we would do it together, with God. Our kids were excited!&nbsp;&nbsp;
We talked about how God was answering our prayers and providing for our adventure. And wow, did he provide! Within six months, we lived in the island nation where God had called us. The next five years were the most uniting and adventurous years we have ever experienced as a family. There were hard days, scary days, exhausting days, and exhilarating days, but, as I look back, I don&rsquo;t recall many lonely days.&nbsp;
The results still benefit our family, 16 years after that family adventure. We feel blessed to have learned a new level of &ldquo;together&rdquo; through living in another country for God&rsquo;s purpose and glory. Joining God&rsquo;s mission as a family in your own country, with all the comforts and distractions, is possible. You can establish some &ldquo;together&rdquo; practices, but you must be intentional.&nbsp;
Perhaps it&rsquo;s a garage sale that you plan and execute as a family, using the proceeds to establish a mission trip fund. Perhaps it&rsquo;s a weekly &ldquo;together&rdquo; night, where a different family member gets to choose an international food or activity for the evening. Perhaps it&rsquo;s a monthly &ldquo;together&rdquo; Google search for an unreached people group. Joining God&rsquo;s mission as a family isn&rsquo;t something that will happen without intention, but it might just fill an empty space you didn&rsquo;t know you had.
