80% of the world’s evangelical Christians live in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Over the last 50 years, God’s church has grown exponentially in these areas.

These regions have tremendous mission sending potential to help bring the gospel to unreached peoples, but they currently send only 20% of the world’s cross-cultural missionaries!

Recently, my wife said, &ldquo;Our daughter has an odd way of interpreting Scripture.&rdquo; Though she said it with a smile, I was immediately curious! My oldest then defended herself by describing the situation. She wanted to wear a particular long skirt on the following school day. My wife wisely said, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not sure that skirt would be practical for the field trip you&rsquo;re going on tomorrow.&rdquo; Ava answered by saying, &ldquo;I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!&rdquo; (Philippians 4:13). We all laughed when she said it with perfect comedic timing, but what made it so funny?

You&rsquo;ve probably heard Philippians 4:13 quoted in all kinds of ways. It's often associated with sports and attributed to nearly superhuman feats that people aspire to accomplish. If I&nbsp; confidently said, &ldquo;Today I&rsquo;ll be drafted as a professional football player,&rdquo; despite being older and out of shape, you would probably be skeptical. But wait...I can do all things right?!

One of my seminary professors once said, &ldquo;The top three most important rules of studying the
Bible are context, context, and context.&rdquo; When Philippians 4:13, or any verse for that matter, is
removed from its larger context, people can miss the meaning.
Let&rsquo;s read the context together in Philippians 4:10-20:
I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
14 Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles. 15 Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; 16 for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need. 17 Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account. 18 I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. 19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.
20 To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
We see Paul is actually writing on the topic of God's provision and contentment. This passage challenged me as a dad to model and teach my children, alongside my wife, that our circumstances don't define us. Here are four encouraging reminders for your family to find contentment in every circumstance:
1. The secret to contentment is relying entirely on the strength of Christ. In verses 10-13, Paul is expressing gratitude to the Philippian church for their support. However, he also wants them to know that it is not what truly sustains him. He knows the secret to contentment is resting in the strength of Jesus. No matter what your family goes through, you can know that real contentment can be experienced because of who Christ is and his heart for you.
2. God is glorified as he provides for you. Verses 14&ndash;20 remind us that the best investments are those that expand Jesus&rsquo; kingdom here on earth. As we consider how our families can sacrificially invest in the Kingdom of God, we can rest in the truth that Jesus will take care of us. Verse 19 is deeply personal &mdash; try reading it with your name and the names of your family members included.&nbsp;
And my God will meet all of ___________&rsquo;s needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.&nbsp;
Let that promise anchor you. Even when it&rsquo;s hard to believe, hold tightly to the assurance that he will do what he says. And when he does, he gets all the glory.
3. The presence, faithfulness, and help of the living God empower us to be content.
Hebrews 13:5-6 reminds us to &ldquo;Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,
&ldquo;Never will I leave you; &nbsp; &nbsp; never will I forsake you.&rdquo;
6 So we say with confidence,
&ldquo;The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. &nbsp; &nbsp; What can mere mortals do to me?&rdquo;
Peace can&rsquo;t come from money or a comfortable lifestyle. It can only come from fully relying on God and firmly rooting our identity in Jesus. When we are aware of his permanent presence in our lives, we can take a deep breath. A mentor once told me, &ldquo;Don&rsquo;t pray that bad things will never happen. We know they will! Instead, pray that you would be aware of the presence of Jesus in the midst of the bad.&rdquo; His presence changes everything, and he has promised it to you and your children!
Home discipleship is hard. Contentment can be just as challenging for adults as it is for children. Rest in the strength and presence of our provider, regardless of the circumstance. Although you&rsquo;ll never do it perfectly, your family will see what it means to take refuge in Jesus. He&rsquo;s better than the best we have and is present in the worst we experience.
My prayer is that we, my family and yours, all embrace the supernatural contentment that only Jesus can provide. The more we experience this contentment, the more our identity in Christ will take shape.
