After God rescued his people from Egypt, he instructed them on how to build the Tabernacle as his dwelling place even before entering the Promised Land. God appeared over the Tabernacle as a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.&nbsp;

Numbers 9:22-23 (NLT) describes how God led his people during this time:&nbsp;
&ldquo;Whether the cloud stayed above the Tabernacle for two days, a month, or a year, the people of Israel stayed in camp and did not move on. But as soon as it lifted, they broke camp and moved on. So they camped or traveled at the Lord&rsquo;s command, and they did whatever the Lord told them through Moses.&rdquo;&nbsp;

They followed God&rsquo;s lead by being attentive to him and obeying his latest command until they got the signal to move on to what he had next for them. Thankfully, because of the work Jesus accomplished through the cross and resurrection, God doesn&rsquo;t instruct us from the Tabernacle today; instead, he actively leads us through his Word and the Spirit dwelling within us.&nbsp;

The question is, are we attentive and obedient to what God has asked us to do?&nbsp;

If God has asked something of us, we need to do it until he tells us to do something else. We naturally expect this of our children. When we say it&rsquo;s time to clean up a mess, we guide them to finish the task and not stop in the middle or go sweep the floor somewhere else. We train them to follow our original instructions. It&rsquo;s our responsibility as parents to explain what&rsquo;s expected, and it's their responsibility to follow through and complete what has been asked.

For example, when our children were younger, they knew at 8:00 pm, it was time to get their pajamas on, brush and floss their teeth, and then meet together to pray. Unless we had given them other instructions, they knew when to start getting ready for bed without us having to tell them again. Some nights bedtime happened at a different time (like holidays) and in a different order, but we always let them know if there was a change in expectations.

God is our good father who has already given us clear and fitting expectations for us as Christians. He even gives you guidance for your specific context. Until he communicates a new direction or adjusts an opportunity, we can continue following his last instruction.

There are two kinds of instructions that God gives to all believers.

Ongoing and Universal
</li>
</ol>
First, God gives his people ongoing and universal commands. They never stop and are for all believers around the world to follow. What has God asked his followers to do?

<ul>

In Mark 12:29-31, Jesus instructs those who follow him to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and love our neighbors as ourselves.&nbsp;
</li>
<li>
In Matthew 6:33, Jesus says to seek the Kingdom of God above all else and live righteously and he will give us everything we need.
</li>
<li>
Jesus instructs his followers to serve as he served (John 13:14-15) and show and tell others the truth about him (Matthew 28:18-20).
</li>
</ul>

We don&rsquo;t have to wait for permission to start loving our neighbor. We don&rsquo;t have to wonder if God has changed his mind about seeking the Kingdom first and living righteously, or try to determine if our circumstance excludes us from serving and sharing the truth about Jesus. At any time, anywhere, we can have confidence that we are joining God in doing these things.&nbsp;

Seasonal and Individual
</li>
</ol>
The second type of instructions is seasonal and for the individual. What has the Lord specifically invited you to do right now? These opportunities are for you and are temporary. How we love, how we serve, and how we spread the Gospel can look different for each person. We must be attentive to God&rsquo;s leadership and guidance for these kinds of instructions. We can hear his voice through praying, reading the Bible, talking with wise believers who also seek him, and being aware of our circumstances.

When our oldest started school, God made it clear I was to be intentional with the conversations I had with other mamas at the school. I ended up building relationships with many women, presenting the Gospel to them, and inviting them to join us at church or Bible study. A handful of mamas accepted Jesus, got more connected at their churches, or asked spiritual questions later during harder life seasons.

After many years, this ministry of intentional conversations ended. The ending was evident because our youngest began secondary school. It would be silly (and inappropriate) for me to go hang out at the elementary school when none of my children attend that school, simply because that&rsquo;s how I have shared Jesus in the past.

In reality, God was asking me to step into something new, partnering with my son in the ministry he was starting after school for his peers. I don&rsquo;t talk with mamas every day anymore, but now I actively support how God is leading my son to reach his friends. This ministry opportunity won&rsquo;t last forever either. It will change when the time comes, and I can trust God to lead us through each season.

We may not fully understand what God is doing in each stage of life, but we can continue to follow what he has already given us as believers and individuals. We can trust him to provide us with guidance as we need it until we enter our Promised Land of heaven, where people from every tribe, language, people, and nation will worship our risen Savior, Jesus, face to face.
