When I came home from our first mission trip, I noticed some small, ordinary things like eating fast food seemed amazing!&nbsp;
I never thought like this before the trip.
As the days passed and I reflected on the whole journey&mdash;not just the time spent in another country, but from the moment my pastor first invited me to pray about going to the minute we landed back home&mdash;I realized that more had changed than just my opinion of fast food.
I was different.&nbsp;
There was an energy and excitement about my future that I could not quite explain. It&rsquo;s like I had discovered something that was going to change the direction of my entire life. I was afraid and excited at the same time.&nbsp;
I began to realize that what I had watched my pastor do over the past eight months&mdash;helping others go to the mission field&mdash;was exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to encourage people to take steps of faith, just as he had encouraged me to do. I longed to partner with others who were on mission, taking the gospel to the ends of the earth. I wanted to support missionaries and ministry partners in ways that were both effective and fruitful. I desired my own family to be a part of the exciting things God was doing all over the world.
Thankfully, my pastor came alongside me to disciple and encourage the desires God had placed in my heart. To begin with, he invited me to join the church&rsquo;s missions committee, pray for the nations with others, and write our church&rsquo;s missions newsletter.
As we began to mobilize people together as a family, following God&rsquo;s call required some difficult choices. Our family had to step away from good things to free up more time to prioritize God&rsquo;s invitation, and we used our vacation time to go on mission trips. We often had to explain these decisions to people who didn&rsquo;t understand&mdash;coworkers, Sunday school leaders, and even our own family, including our children! At times, I wrestled with doubt, wondering if it was truly God leading us or just my own desires. Those early choices shaped our family&rsquo;s path for years ahead.
Three decades later, I can look back and see God&rsquo;s faithfulness. We are still saying yes to his call&mdash;helping others share the gospel around the world. Along the way, I&rsquo;ve learned to involve my family better, walking and praying together through each step. I&rsquo;ve also learned to trust my wife&rsquo;s wisdom and make decisions together as we follow the Lord. It&rsquo;s an incredibly rich blessing to serve God as a family, united in purpose and faith.
While the memories of that first mission trip have faded over time, our family has embraced a lifestyle of similar experiences around the world&mdash;each one a testimony to God&rsquo;s faithfulness. We've learned that what God desires most is our willingness and availability; he will take care of the rest.&nbsp;
He cares far more about shaping us into the image of his Son than about anything we might &ldquo;do&rdquo; for him. Trusting him as we take each next step of faith is one of the ways he forms us to be more like Jesus. As Colossians 2:6 (ESV) reminds us: &ldquo;Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him.&rdquo; Wherever you are in your journey, God invites you to take that next step of faith to trust him with the rest.&nbsp;
