Sometimes, when we teach the Bible to children, we can miss the opportunity to highlight God as the true hero of the story. How could we teach the Bible and not have God be the hero? It&rsquo;s easier than we think, and it often happens with the best of intentions.
I made this mistake often during my first years of teaching children about the Bible. I would talk about the "heroes of our faith"&mdash;Noah, Moses, David, and Samson&mdash;as if they were just like modern-day superheroes. But the problem with these heroes&mdash;whether found in Scripture or in DC or Marvel comic books&mdash;is that they are fallible. They will always fall short of perfection. No matter how much we admire them, they are still human. And because they are human, they will always fail at some point. Romans 3:23 reminds us that &ldquo;all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.&rdquo;
I&rsquo;ll take this a step further&mdash;sometimes we elevate missionaries, pastors, authors, or teachers into the role of hero. Again, we do this with good intentions; the faith of others is helpful and encouraging. However, when it comes to teaching the Bible to our children, there should only ever be one hero: God!
Many of us unintentionally lead our children in the wrong direction by focusing too much on human examples. I have encountered children&rsquo;s Bible storybooks and lesson plans that miss the mark, emphasizing moral character traits from biblical figures rather than highlighting God&rsquo;s unchanging character. Instead of learning about God&rsquo;s faithfulness, children might hear about how Noah was faithful in building the ark. Instead of seeing God&rsquo;s patience with his people, they may just hear about Joseph or Moses being patient in their difficult circumstances.
The problem with this approach is that it subtly teaches children to rely on human strength rather than on God&rsquo;s power. It can lead them to believe that being good or making the right choices is what makes them acceptable to God. While obedience and character growth are important, they should flow from a relationship with God, not be the foundation of it. If we aren&rsquo;t careful, we can unintentionally communicate a message of self-reliance instead of dependence on God&rsquo;s grace.
How do we shift our focus?
When you read Bible stories with your children, ask:

What does this story teach us about who God is?

How do we see God&rsquo;s power, love, faithfulness, or patience in this story?

How does this help us trust God more?
</li>
<li>
How does this show us our need for God?
</li>
</ul>
Yes, we want to encourage our children to be faithful, patient, and kind. But more than that, we want to point them to the One who is perfectly faithful, endlessly patient, and truly good.
One practical way to do this is by rephrasing how we talk about Bible stories. Instead of saying, "David was so brave when he fought Goliath," we can say, "God gave David courage and strength to defeat Goliath." Instead of "Daniel was so faithful to pray even when it was dangerous," we can say, "Daniel trusted in God, and God protected him." This small shift keeps the emphasis on God&rsquo;s role rather than human effort.
As parents, we have the privilege of helping our children know and love God, not just as a distant figure in a book but as the true hero of everyone&rsquo;s story. The goal isn&rsquo;t just to raise good children but to raise children who love and trust a great God. Let&rsquo;s be intentional in pointing our children to him every time we open the Bible together!
